‘Ik ben helaas een roker, maar ik schrok toen ik realiseerde dat ik achteloos een peuk had weggegooid en daarmee tevens schuldig was aan het vervuilen van de natuur. Ik heb net zo lang gezocht tot ik hem vond. Pas in de stad verdween hij in een prullenbak…’
Presentator en producent Tim Immers is één van de zeven bekende Nederlanders die samen met Koning Aap naar Brazilië is afgereisd. In samenwerking met het Wereld Natuur Fonds (WNF) vragen zij meer aandacht voor het Amazone regenwoud, dat wordt bedreigd door de aanleg van wegen en dammen en de ontbossing. In 2004 alleen al is er een oppervlakte van 2,6 miljoen hectare, ongeveer net zo groot als België, gekapt. Niet alleen voor de houtindustrie, maar ook voor het verkrijgen van ruimte voor veeteelt en sojaplantages. Twee jaar later, in december 2006, heeft het WNF het al voor elkaar gekregen om 164.000 km2 tot beschermd gebied uit te roepen, dit beslaat echter slechts zo’n 2,5 procent van het hele natuurgebied.
Om de rest van het Amazoneregenwoud ook te beschermen en te zorgen voor een duurzaam beheer, vraagt Koning Aap samen met zeven bekende Nederlanders aandacht voor de huidige problemen. Iedereen krijgt een eigen project toegewezen, waarin men zich verdiept, om daarna hun ervaringen op tv met de kijkers te delen. Ondertussen leven zij met beperkte middelen en proberen ze te overleven in dit grootste regenwoud op aarde.
Uiteraard is het programma niet alleen bedoeld om informatie te verschaffen, de kijkers worden tevens aangespoord om te helpen. Tim Immers: ‘Kijk eens wat kritischer naar je eigen handelen. Draai je de kraan dicht tijdens het poetsen van je tanden? Scheelt een hoop waterverspilling. Zo simpel kan het zijn…’
Surviving Nature; Cowboys & Angels is elke zaterdag om 16:30 te zien op RTL 4. Gedurende tien weken volg je Tim Immers, Marian Mudder, Loretta Schrijver, Harm Edens, Piet Hein Eek, Maarten Spanjer en Fabiënne de Vries op ontdekkingsreis door Brazilië. Mede dankzij hun inzet voor duurzaam toerisme zullen avontuurlijke gebieden ook nog lang écht avontuurlijk blijven.
