Trends
In het najaar van 2006 heeft de European Travel Commission een rapport uitgebracht over toerisme trends in Europa.
Volgens de ETC zijn er enkele zeer opvallende trends waarneembaar. Door middel van samenwerking met National Tourist Offices (NTO’s) en de European Travel & Tourism Action Group (ETAG) is er een verslag gemaakt van deze ontwikkelingen.
Jongeren en jongvolwassenen
Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat reisaanbieders zich vaak richten op ouderen, maar volgens de ETC mogen jongeren en jongvolwassenen ook zeker niet vergeten worden. Deze groep, met leeftijden tussen de 16 en 35 jaar, nemen namelijk 20% van de reismarkt in beslag, wat vooral wordt veroorzaakt door stijgende inkomens en een toename van alleenstaanden. Wonen er nu nog 800.000 alleenstaanden in Nederland, in 2025 zal dit aantal naar verwachting oplopen tot 3,3 miljoen Nederlanders. Dit verschijnsel doet zich niet alleen voor in de randstad, ook op het platteland blijven mensen langer alleen en gaat men eerder uit elkaar. Uiteindelijk zal er slechts één gemeente, Staphorst, overblijven waar minder dan een kwart van de huishoudens een alleenstaande betreft. Deze alleenstaande jongeren zullen steeds meer interesse krijgen in actieve vakanties, met veel avontuur.
Klimaatverandering
De klimaatverandering is tegenwoordig onderwerp van gesprek. Of het grote gevolgen zal hebben voor de aarde is onduidelijk, maar het toerisme zal er zeker aan aangepast worden. Op zonovergoten bestemmingen aan de Middellandse Zee zal het waterpeil verder stijgen, waardoor kustplaatsen kunnen overstromen en uiteindelijk niet meer toegankelijk zijn voor toeristen. Op dit moment gebeurt dat al met de romantische stad Venetië. Ook de steeds hoger wordende temperaturen in Zuid Europa zullen leiden tot meer bosbranden, waardoor tour operators andere bestemmingen zullen moeten gaan zoeken.
Het veranderen van het klimaat geeft mensen echter wel een grotere verantwoordelijkheid voor het milieu. Men is dan ook meer geïnteresseerd in de natuur van de bestemming dan voorheen en wil genieten van de prachtige gebieden waar de aarde nog wel over beschikt. Voor reisaanbieders een geschikt moment om hier op in te springen, wat is er mooier dan met een groep avontuurlijk mountainbiken door de ruige natuur van Scandinavië?
Economische factoren
Door de groeiende economie komen er elk jaar nieuwe vakantiebestemmingen bij. Enkele jaren geleden werd Tsjechië ontdekt, een goedkoop land met veel mogelijkheden tot actieve vakanties. Tegenwoordig worden er met 6,72% bijna net zo veel reizen geboekt naar dit Oost-Europees land als naar de populaire winterbestemming Zwitserland met 7,49%.
Vooral Oost-Europese landen als Polen, Slowakijke, Roemenië, Hongarije, Bulgarije en de Baltische Staten lijken het nu goed te gaan doen. Reisaanbieders als Anders Reizen en Discovery Reizen bieden al avontuurlijke groepsreizen aan naar deze bestemming, maar ook noSun biedt dit jaar voor de eerste keer een groepsreis aan naar Litouwen. Organisaties als Intertrek, Kilroy reizen, Kuoni en Shoestring lijken hierin echter nog niet mee te gaan.
Doordat er steeds meer nieuwe bestemmingen bij komen, moet de infrastructuur ook steeds verbetert worden. De low-cost airline SkyEurope speelt hier goed op in, sinds enkele weken biedt zij ook goedkope vluchten aan naar Wenen. Dit is een goede uitvalsbasis voor een tocht door Oost-Europa.
Internet
Nog meer dan voorgaande jaren is internet een belangrijk hulpmiddel bij het zoeken naar een geschikte reis. Men gaat zelf op zoek naar leuke vakantiebestemmingen en vraagt online advies aan andere reizigers. Blogs zijn vooral populair, hier is vaak relevante informatie op te vinden.
Waar men dan voornamelijk naar op zoek is, zijn unieke bestemmingen. Tegenwoordig hangt op elke hoek van de straat een webcam, welke vanaf internet te volgen is. De uitdaging om afgelegen gebieden te ontdekken is dan ook steeds meer aanwezig.
Aan de hand van dit rapport kan gezegd worden dat de veranderingen in het vakantiegedrag van Nederlanders positief is voor reisaanbieders van avontuurlijke rondreizen. Te hopen is dat deze trend zich nog lange tijd voortzet, zodat groepsreizen nog lang georganiseerd zullen worden. Want des te meer men gaat reizen, des te meer respect, tolerantie en begrip men kan opbrengen voor andere culturen.
